Chairman's Update

Dear Members

Many thanks to the large number of you who have promptly paid your subscription for the 2010 year, and also to the many who have sent donations to the Association. This is greatly appreciated.

New Chums

Currently there is nothing further to report on the development of New Chums. We shall contact you the moment we have any information.

However, meanwhile you may be interested to listen to a forthcoming ‘Insight’ documentary on National Radio where New Chums may feature. The documentary will be presented during ‘Sunday Morning with Chris Laidlaw’ which starts at 8:12am on Sunday 2 May. The documentary is titled ‘Coastal Development’ where Insight’s Executive Producer and reporter, Sue Ingram, asks whether housing subdivisions are out of control in coastal regions, threatening to spoil well-loved holiday spots. WBRA’s Erwin Drok was interviewed by Sue for the documentary and accompanied her on a walk around the rocks to view New Chums.

Radio New Zealand National can be found at 101.4 FM in Auckland and generally 101 FM elsewhere. Programmes can also be played off the Insight page of the Radio New Zealand web site at

Jenny Villiger from the Reserves group sends the following message to members:

"Firstly I would like to thank people for their fantastic effort planting the dunes over Easter, including four reserves. The dunes are starting to look established and attractive. The next planting weekend will be at Queen’s Birthday weekend if Environment Waikato is still able to support the beach care programme by providing the plants. I learned at the weekend that Jim Dahm, the coastal scientist, who was at our planting day, was the initiator of the highly effective beach care programme in New Zealand. We are lucky to have him.

There are four crates that still need to be returned after the planting. Could you please leave them on the back deck at 222 Tangiora Ave and I will make sure they are returned to the nurseries. We do not want to be charged for replacing them.

There is a new notice board in the shelter shed near the playground that contains reserve group information about upcoming events. Please make sure you check it from time to time."
